Proenza Schouler: Catch The Wave

Good for Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough. I've been a tiny bit dubious about some of their recent collections but tonight they had a hit. Their collection of short, funky neon surfer girl prints mixed with fringe embroidery and cut out bra tops had all the power of their original signature (the cut out bra tops) but also some new twists. The show opened with three or four great navy or black cotton canvas jackets with piqued shoulders shown over long board short-style pants or skirts that looked like they were made of wind breakers tied around the hips (some more successful than others). The models had beach bum hair, too, which gave the show a kind of casual Dogtown vibe. But then the designers suddenly turned on the fireworks for evening and showed a run of stellar short jacquard tank dresses. Something about that last evening passage of dresses made me think modern Valentino. The overall effect was spot on for those young Hollywood front row fans like Leighton Meester.
