With their stage makeup, splayed feet and hair drawn back in tight top knots the ethereal looking models at Marc Jacobs' show last night looked like they will fit in perfectly next season at New York Fashion Week's new home at Lincoln Center. Presumably inspired by dancers of all kinds--from Martha Graham to Merrill Ashley--Jacobs made a strong and convincing statement about individuality and eccentricity. After so many subtle and not so subtle fashion dictates (eighties neon! seven inch heels! short skirts! pouf dresses! belts!) it was refreshing to finally see something that reeked of originality. The models, with their flat shoes and a funky mix of plain Jane trench coats and far-out frills, could have just emerged from the stage door at the State Theater--they had personality and mystery and all those things we go to the theater to marvel at and absorb. Bravo!
