Welcome to New York Fashion Week

On Point: British handbag designer Anya Hindmarch gave out fashion week needlepoint samplers to visitors at her meatpacking showroom.

Fashion week blows into New York City today—literally. The winds are gusting up to 39 mph here in midtown, sweeping bus stop signs, newspaper boxes, and detritus all over the sidewalks as fashion week revs up. Hundreds of designers will be showing their fall, 2009 collections on runways in Bryant Park and elsewhere or in showroom presentations, photo studios, and restaurants. The first show today is Rachel Roy at the Frank Gehry designed IAC building. Tomorrow my guest blogger, the fierce and fabulous Christian Siriano will join me. I'm hoping that he provides an insider point of view as well as his knife-sharp criticism and witticism of all things fashion. Maybe he'll shed some light on how young designers are surviving in this brutal economy, too. Photos of backstage trends, tirades, and fashion dramas come courtesy of intrepid photographer, Andrew Lamb. When New York is over, we will head to London, Milan and finally Paris, with more guest bloggers joining us along the way. So keep logging in and checking out the fashion news from the runways and beyond.
