Don't Tell Me What You Really Think
I don't really read reviews of my shows. I kind of acknowledge it. I say, “Oh there it is.” I don't read it. I just kind of glance and look at it. Because, after one finishes this incredibly emotional journey the last thing you can do is recognize the truth about it. It's like having been through labor or something and someone saying, “you're baby is really ugly.” It's sort of an impossibility really. I remember thinking to myself once that I respect the fashion critics so much. They're like friends of mine. And I wonder what if I didn't like people's work that are my friends? It must be really hard to impart that information. I remember once I asked a friend, “How do you go backstage after a show when you don't like someone's work? What do you tell them after the show?” and he said, “I lie.” And I thought that was great advice. From now on I'm only going to lie to people so you can never really tell what I think in the end.
